ENG 283A - Rhetorical Grammar

Students planning to write professionally or in advanced academic programs will acquire a deeper understanding of the ‘nuts and bolts’ as well as causes and conditions of writing and communicating successfully. In this course in rhetorical grammar, students will explore the mechanics of writing within the context of the rhetorical situations, theorizing, and choices available to them.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. pass a basic examination on U.S. Standard English grammar (including but not limited to the parts of speech, nominalization, verb tense and aspect, modification, and sentence structure and combination), usage, and punctuation.
2. describe the relationship of U.S. Standard English grammar to other American dialects and Global Englishes in a way that demonstrates an awareness of the history of English as a colonial enterprise.
3. describe the rhetorical effects of particular modulations of English grammar, usage, and punctuation—e.g., passive voice, nominalization, parenthesis.
4. in their own writing and speaking, modulate English grammar in order to achieve an intended rhetorical effect.
