ENGR 717 - Mixed Methods in Engineering Education

(3 units)
Introduction to mixed methods research for doctoral students. Focusing on the design and implementation of research that combines qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, introducing innovative methods including data transformation (qualitative data is quantized). Centrally, the course addresses the meaning of “mixing” or ways to integrate qualitative and quantitative data.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. design and conduct experiments as well as to analyze, interpret, apply, and disseminate the data.
2. demonstrate an understanding of key historical, philosophical, and paradigmatic debates about mixed methods research methodology.
3. identify the distinguishing characteristics of 6 major mixed methods research designs.
4. identify criteria to systematically evaluate scholarly quality of publications that utilize mixed methods.
5. identify different ways to transform and combine qualitative and quantitative data.
