IDS 300 - Service Learning

Service Learning offers a structured opportunity to engage in direct experience that links theory and practice. Through organized involvement in community service, students will integrate learning and self-reflection, with the goal of building professional skills and the values of reciprocity, stewardship, and civic responsibility.

Grading Basis: Graded
Units of Lecture: 2
Units of Internship/Practicum: 1
Offered: Every Fall and Spring

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. design a self-initiated interdisciplinary project that both serves the community and expands student knowledge, skill base and understanding of civic engagement.
2. complete 50 hours of pre-arranged community service with clearly defined goals and research that integrates the service experience with disciplinary knowledge.
3. create an integrative final project designed to meet learning goals and for a specific audience.
4. present formally to faculty and student peers about the culmination of the service learning experience.
5. reflect on service learning and professional experiences, gaining a stronger assessment of personal skills, strengths, challenges and professional goals.
