MATH 734 - Algebraic Geometry

Introduction to algebraic geometry over an algebraically closed field, focusing on classical constructions with a modern perspective. Affine and projective varieties; Veronese and Segre maps; tangent spaces and dimension; singularities; abstract algebraic varieties; sheaf theory.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. analyze simple examples of algebraic varieties, and answer questions concerning their irreducible components and singularities.
2. establish precise connections between commutative algebra and algebraic geometry.
3. describe quasi-projective varieties as locally ringed spaces.
