Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. identify and describe foundational theories and research related to early literacy development (emergent literacy, family literacy, oral language development).
2. identify and describe the following early literacy instructional and assessment components: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension, and writing.
3. describe how the early literacy components (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, comprehension, and writing) support an effective literacy curriculum in prekindergarten through third grade.
4. demonstrate how to select, implement, analyze, and use literacy assessments to evaluate students and plan instruction.
5. plan lessons and units of study based on theory and research supported curriculum and instructional strategies that will meet the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students and students with a wide range of skills and abilities.
