An analysis of ASL structure, its morphology, syntax, and change over time. This course examines the unique modality of signed languages, and includes a comparison to other linguistics structures, as well as accents and regional variations.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. apply the layered syntax of ASL correctly and produce a fluent stream of sign by effectively coordinating face, body, space and sign.
2. explain the syntactic constraints of ASL and how they govern language production.
3. identify the role of facial expression in prosody for sentence construction.
4. implement a wide range of verb inflections in complex ASL discourse.
