JOUR 687 - Mass Communication Theories

This course provides a broad understanding of the theoretical foundation of media content, including message delivery, development, and consumption. We will examine the role of theory in media institutions and the mass communication process, helping you to become intelligent consumers of media. Upon completing this course, you should be able to evaluate and interpret the influence and impact of mass communication and media as it relates to a variety of different contexts.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. apply the theoretical foundations found in media communication and social science research.
2. discuss the applicability of different theories of mass communication to problems in the media.
3. evaluate and interpret theoretical application in scholarly work.
4. explain basic concepts and issues in foundational media theories and new media theories.
5. identify and apply appropriate theories to critically engage with the media as producers, consumers, or users.
6. explore the relationship between mass communication theory and a diversity of groups in global context.
7. learn about the necessary processes related to submitting papers to conferences and/or journals.
