BIOL 310 - Human Genetics

(3 units)
Human Genetics is an upper division course that focuses on applying genetic techniques to human subjects and disorders rather than model organisms. Discussing mutations and genetic disorders, examining pedigrees in order to determine the mode of inheritance of human traits, this course focuses on the ways in which humans are unique subjects with a lack of simple Mendelian traits. Grades are based on homework, exams, a pedigree project, presentations and discussions of primary literature papers.

Maximum units a student may earn: 3

Prerequisite(s): BIOL 300  or BIOL 304

Grading Basis: Graded
Units of Lecture: 3
Offered: Every Spring

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. read and evaluate primary literature in human genetics.
2. conduct pedigree analysis.
3. apply Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium to the study of population genetics.
4. evaluate the complexities and regulation of gene expression, including epigenetics.
5. examine current theories on Hominin evolution.
6. evaluate the mechanisms and complexities of gene technology and gene therapy.
7. demonstrate an understanding of cancer genetics, the human immune system and reproductive therapies.
