This course explores the structures, functions, and complexities of tribal governments, with a focus on their historical foundations, evolving legal frameworks, and contemporary challenges. Students will examine the traditions, constitutions, and treaties that have shaped tribal governance and sovereignty in the United States.

Prerequisite(s): PSC 101 or ETS 280 or a CO5 (History and Culture) course or a CO8 (Constitution) course.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. identify and interpret the complex diplomatic relationship that exists between the numerous Tribal Nations and the United States by examination of historical documents.
2. explain the broader implications of treaty obligations and agreements as it pertains to present day Tribal Nations and their exercise of tribal sovereignty.
3. distinguish the relationship between past and present-day law and practices to treaty and agreement obligations, vis-à-vis Supreme Court decisions, tribal laws, and federal laws.
4. discuss the relationship between a contemporary issue related directly to American Indian Treaties or Agreements through a research project.
