FCM 661LM - LGBTQ+ Healthcare 4th Year Med Student Elective (4 units) This is an immersive rotation in the largest LGBTQ+ focused clinic in the state. The student is expected to participate in all aspects of the primary care of the patients in this clinic, under the supervision of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and/or physicians. At the discretion of clinic personnel, the student will conduct patient visits, obtain a history including sexual history and organ inventory, examine the patient, develop a differential diagnosis and then present assessment and plan to the supervising nurse practitioner.
Maximum units a student may earn: 4
Prerequisite(s): Specific approval needed through OME and Dr. Thiele, may be accomplished by written application to Dr. Thiele
Grading Basis: Medical School Grades Units of Internship/Practicum: 4 Offered: Every Fall, Spring, and Summer
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe the epidemiology of HIV in the state of Nevada. 2. comfortably take a sexual history and organ inventory. 3. accurately risk stratify patients for PrEP and describe the pharmacological therapy options. 4. describe the management Hepatitis C and HIV, from diagnosis to treatment. 5. describe hormone therapies common to gender affirming goals.
