NP 652 - Response to Radioactive Material Transport Emergencies

(1 unit)
Principles, technical basis, and requirements for preparedness and response to emergencies during nuclear and other radioactive material transport. Emphasizes interaction between engineering controls and radiation protection. Expands on Transportation Emergency Preparedness Program (TEPP) training, emphasizing roles of technical experts working with all-hazards emergency response organizations to conduct package assessments and technical response actions.  This course is offered primarily at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois and may be occasionally offered at other authorized locations. Students are responsible for all national laboratory fees and expenses associated with the course location.

Maximum units a student may earn: 1

Prerequisite(s): Graduate standing. Knowledge of package safety functions & design gained from courses, Transportation Emergency Preparedness training, or professional experience; Recommended Preparation: basic principles of emergency management.

Grading Basis: Graded
Units of Lecture: 1
Offered: Every Fall

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. apply engineering research and theory to advance the art, science, and practice of the discipline.
2. identify the aspects of consignments and packages that determine emergency planning requirements and the application of a graded approach.
3. describe the roles and responsibilities of emergency response organizations and how they integrate during emergency operations.
4. plan radiological surveys, recommend protective actions, and assess packaging safety functions for damaged packages on land and at sea.
5. describe likely future developments in the use of nuclear and radioactive materials and the impact on emergency planning requirements.
