PBH 633 - Youth Development Epidemiology

This course will apply principles of life course epidemiology to understand the distribution and determinants of a range of health outcomes from early adolescence through young adulthood and will explore positive youth development prevention approaches. The course will primarily focus on epidemiologic research in the United States, but the foundational approach can be applied to international settings.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate an understanding of biological and social foundation of life course epidemiology.
2. use surveillance and epidemiology research to describe the distribution of adolescent/young adult health outcomes according to person, place, and time.
3. apply a social ecological approach to identify determinants of behavioral health outcomes among adolescents/young adults and will evaluate the policy and program approaches to addressing health inequalities.
4. integrate and synthesize epidemiologic data and public health research to understand and address complex health issues that occur during adolescent and young adult developmental periods.
5. critically evaluate current youth epidemiology research.
