EDU 245 - Foundations of Elementary Literacy & the Science of Reading (3 units) EDU 245 is designed to teach the Science of Reading’s five pillars of reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Recent research and theory will be used to teach instructional strategies and assessments that can be adapted to meet the needs of diverse student populations.
Maximum units a student may earn: 3
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. define the 5 pillars of the Science of Reading. 2. identify and analyze instructional and assessment materials related to the 5 pillars. 3. apply key instructional methods based on the 5 pillars to student needs.
