Course is designed to teach intermediate (B1) students to more clearly speak and write about facts and ideas related to their daily lives by improving the accuracy of the grammatical structures they use and expanding their vocabulary.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe the parts of a paragraph and how they work together to explain one main idea.
2. write a well-organized cohesive paragraph, using pronouns, articles, transitions and conjunctions to connect ideas.
3. use a variety of sentence types: simple, compound and complex in paragraphs.
4. describe personal reactions and opinions, supporting them with reasons and examples.
5. write a how-to paragraph, using real conditionals.
6. use time markers and verb tenses to shift between past and present time frames in a paragraph describing changes.
7. write a paragraph about events that affect current activities, using present perfect.
8. summarize the main idea of an article, both orally and in writing.
9. use common reporting verbs and that- clauses to describe another person’s ideas and beliefs.
10. present a simple anecdote that gives context for an opinion.
11. develop an outline for an essay that includes a thesis statement and key words and phrases for supporting ideas.
12. write a straightforward opinion essay that includes at least one quotation from an outside source.
13. evaluate own writing progress and plan ways to improve writing.
