NRES 250 - Introduction to Sustainable Outdoor Recreation Management (3 units) An introduction to the field of outdoor recreation management. This course includes the historical development of outdoor recreation, types of services provided and resources utilized, the sustainable management of public areas including economic, cultural, and political considerations, and professional/career opportunities in the field of outdoor recreation.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe the historical development of outdoor recreation in the U.S. 2. identify the types of outdoor recreation experiences valued and practiced by society. 3. identify the major public and private outdoor recreation providers in the U.S. 4. examine multicultural differences and perspectives as related to outdoor recreation. 5. recognize common ecological and social impacts (pros and cons) of outdoor recreation. 6. outline frameworks/strategies and practices designed to sustainably manage outdoor recreation use of protected areas (parks, forests, and other outdoor resources). 7. summarize current trends, challenges, and issues in the outdoor recreation industry. 8. explore professional/career opportunities in the outdoor recreation field.
