Students will read academic texts on a variety of topics and identify target vocabulary, grammatical structures, and expressions illustrated in them. Students study the form, meaning, and use of the language, and then apply it in productive tasks that progress gradually in difficulty from paragraph to expository essay writing. Students also independently practice the skills they are learning using an online writing tool, and apply their learning in timed in-class writing tasks.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe cause and effect relationships, using common words, phrases, and expressions.
2. write an effective introductory paragraph that includes a hook and thesis statement.
3. write a cause and effect essay with an engaging introduction, logically organized body paragraphs, and an effective conclusion.
4. write a narrative paragraph using correct verb tense shifts.
5. use a variety of sentence structures, including simple, compound and complex.
6. write a narrative essay using effective time signals and cohesive devices.
7. compare and contrast elements of familiar topics, using target words, phrases, and expressions.
8. write a compare and contrast essay, using either the block or point-by-point method, and ending with an impactful conclusion.
9. identify target academic words and phrases, researching and practicing usage to expand active vocabulary.
10. cite sources in a list of references using correct APA style.
