OBGY 661BM - Basic Colposcopy

(2-4 units)

The course is ambulatory, and the student will be an integral part of the health care team from the beginning cervical screening to the discussion of findings. From informed consent to diagnostic evaluation to treatment and continued management. Integrated into this will be the use of the ASCCP app and HPV immunization. In addition, special groups will be discussed (pregnancy and under 25 years) as well as in introduction to vulva anatomy
and benign and neoplastic changes.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. develop a comprehensive understanding of the cervical screening process, from patient consent to the interpretation and discussion of findings within the clinical setting.
2. demonstrate the ability to effectively use the ASCCP app as a clinical tool for cervical screening, diagnosis, and management, integrating it into patient care.
3. acquire skills in the use of the colposcope, including identifying normal and abnormal cervical findings, with an emphasis on diagnostic accuracy.
4. analyze and differentiate between various management strategies for cervical findings, including when to pursue follow-up versus immediate treatment, tailored to individual patient needs.
5. gain in-depth knowledge of the different treatment options for cervical abnormalities, with an ability to evaluate and select appropriate interventions.
6. explain the role of HPV immunization in cervical cancer prevention and apply this knowledge in patient education and clinical practice.
7. develop a foundational understanding of vulvar anatomy, recognizing both benign and neoplastic changes, and incorporating this knowledge into patient assessment and care.
8. apply specialized knowledge to manage cervical screening and treatment in special populations, including pregnant women and individuals under 25 years of age.
