SPA 714 - SPA Graduate Clinical Education 5

Graduate supervised clinical experience in the assessment and treatment of children and adults with various differences and disorders of communication, cognition, and swallowing. Faculty Clinical Educators provide supervision of graduate student clinicians and facilitate the growth toward clinical competency.

Prerequisite(s): Must be admitted to a graduate program in Speech Pathology and Audiology.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. demonstrate accountability specific to the ASHA Code of Ethics, Scope of Practice, professional fiduciary responsibility for everyone served, and federal state, and institutional regulations and policies related to the profession of speech pathology.
2. differentiate service delivery models based on practice sties (e.g., hospital, school, private practice).
3. recognize the effects of their actions and make appropriate changes as needed.
4. explain the health care and education landscapes and how to facilitate access to services in both sectors.
5. communicate in a responsive and responsible manner with consumers, communities, and interprofessional team colleagues and other professionals.
6. engage in evidence-based practice by accessing and critically evaluating information sources, applying information to appropriate populations, and integrating evidence in provision of speech-language pathology services.
7. integrate knowledge of one’s own role and those of other professions to appropriately assess and address the needs of the individuals and populations served.
8. apply foundational knowledge (e.g., biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural bases) as they relate to the discipline of human communication sciences and disorders.
9. explain the nature, evaluation, and intervention of communication and swallowing differences with individuals across the lifespan to minimize the impact and increase the ability to participate fully in the environment.
10. apply general knowledge and skills applicable to professional practice in the areas of ethics, counseling, interdependence of speech, language, and hearing, advocacy, self-assessment, clinical supervision, cultural humility, and interpersonal skills.
