CRJ 618 - Constitutional Law: Separation of Powers and Federalism

Constitutional Law focuses on issues of federalism and the separation of powers. The course will include a thorough examination of our constitution, the role of the courts in interpreting it, and how judges apply its centuries-old principles to questions of modern American life. Students will learn about the rule of law, individual liberties, war powers, gun rights, criminal procedure, and interstate commerce as well as other topics related to constitutional law and the criminal justice system.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain the jurisdiction of the Federal courts.
2. compare and contrast the powers of the Federal government to those of the States and the different theories of Federal-State relations.
3. apply contemporary understandings of Federal power to pending court cases.
4. articulate how Congress’s power to regulate of interstate commerce has expanded the scope of Federal power.
5. analyze the president’s war powers.
6. apply contemporary understandings of Federal Power to pending court cases.
