CRJ 621 - Problem-Solving Courts

In this course we will critically analyze problem-solving courts, and the variety of processes and procedure used within these differing court models. We will also critically examine the policy goals supporting continuing, starting, or expanding the use of these various alternative processes to resolve criminal cases. In addition to critical analysis of these processes, students will also have an opportunity to do field visits to local problem-solving courts to see the process firsthand.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe how problem-solving courts work in the U.S., the similarities and differences they share, as well as how they differ from the traditional trial court system.
2. utilize a variety of theoretical perspectives and empirical research to analyze issues of criminal justice in history and contemporary society as it pertains to problem-solving courts.
3. critically review and recognize the basic policies and principles surrounding the use of these alternative processes.
4. integrate and synthesize knowledge of these alternative processes with diverse perspectives to address problems in contemporary society.
5. formulate research ideas and plans on assigned topics in the course and complete an advanced research project.
