NURS 303 - Rural Health Theory

(3 units)
This course provides an in-depth exploration of rural health from a theoretical and systems-based perspective. Students will examine the unique health disparities, social determinants of health, cultural values, access barriers, and community strengths that define rural populations. Emphasis is placed on rural nursing theory, policy, and evidence-informed strategies to address health inequities. The course prepares students to advocate for and implement holistic, community-centered care in rural settings.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. analyze rural health concepts and rural nursing theory to guide professional nursing practice.
2. assess the impact of social determinants of health on rural populations and their associated health outcomes.
3. identify structural and geographic barriers that impact access to quality healthcare in rural communities.
4. interpret rural health data to support population-focused nursing care and decision-making.
5. evaluate the impact of health policy on shaping rural healthcare systems and nursing advocacy efforts.
6. develop evidence-based, community-centered interventions that address identified rural health needs.
