MLS 601L - Hematology & Coagulation Laboratory (1 unit) Covers theory and clinical application of hematologic and coagulation disorders. Includes blood cell formation, normal and abnormal cell ID, and diagnostic test principles. Coagulation topics include clotting and fibrinolytic systems and related testing. Emphasizes clinical significance of results in diagnosing disease. Case studies and clinical decision-making strategies are integrated throughout.
Maximum units a student may earn: 1
Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the MLS program
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Laboratory/Studio: 1 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. perform routine and specialized hematology and coagulation procedures with accuracy and precision, including complete blood counts (CBC), peripheral blood smear evaluations, and coagulation testing (e.g., PT, aPTT). 2. identify and differentiate normal and abnormal blood cell morphology using a microscope and automated cell counters, correlating findings with potential hematologic disorders. 3. interpret and evaluate hematology and coagulation test results in the context of clinical scenarios to assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of hematologic and hemostatic disorders. 4. apply quality control and quality assurance principles to ensure the validity and reliability of hematology and coagulation laboratory results. 5. identify pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical causes of error in laboratory testing. 6. demonstrate proper safety and specimen handling procedures in compliance with laboratory regulations and infection control standards.
