MLS 602 - Urinalysis & Body Fluids (2 units) Introduces urine and body fluid analysis, including kidney anatomy and physiology. Covers physical, chemical, and microscopic examination of urine, cerebrospinal fluid, and other body fluids. Emphasizes quality control, quality assurance, and laboratory safety. Focuses on differentiating normal and abnormal findings and correlating results with normal physiology and disease states.
Maximum units a student may earn: 2
Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the MLS program.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 2 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate understanding of renal anatomy and physiology by explaining the processes involved in urine formation, including filtration, reabsorption, and secretion. 2. identify the origin, composition, and diagnostic value of various body fluids, including cerebrospinal, synovial, pleural, peritoneal, and pericardial fluids. 3. differentiate between normal and abnormal urinalysis results and correlate abnormalities with specific disease states and clinical conditions. 4. identify pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical causes of error in laboratory testing. 5. discuss principles of quality control, quality assurance, and safety as they apply to urinalysis testing in a clinical laboratory setting.
