MLS 603 - Immunology & Serology (2 units) Covers antigen-antibody reactions, types of immunity, inflammation, and immunoglobulins. Students study immunodeficiency, autoimmune disorders, and hypersensitivity reactions. Emphasizes principles of serologic, immunologic, and molecular testing used in disease diagnosis and monitoring. Focuses on correlating test results with clinical conditions and understanding immune system dysfunctions.
Maximum units a student may earn: 2
Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the MLS program
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 2 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain the components and functions of the immune system, including innate and adaptive immunity, and their roles in host defense. 2. differentiate between various types of antigens and antibodies, including immunoglobulin classes, and describe their clinical significance. 3. describe the immune response to infectious agents, including the production of specific antibodies and the development of immunological memory. 4. correlate immunological principles with disease processes, such as hypersensitivity reactions, autoimmunity, transplantation immunology, and tumor immunology. 5. state the principle of serological and molecular tests used in the diagnosis of infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, and immune deficiencies.
