MLS 604 - Clinical Chemistry I

(2 units)
Introduces the clinical aspects of biochemistry, including overview of principles and instrumentation with emphasis on practical laboratory application of analytical procedures, specimen collection and handling, significance of results, and quality assurance. Includes analysis of blood and other body fluids for blood gas content, electrolytes, enzymes, hormones, therapeutic drugs, toxicology, and other constituents of clinical interest, utilizing both automated and manual techniques.

Maximum units a student may earn: 2

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the MLS program

Grading Basis: Graded
Units of Lecture: 2
Offered: Every Fall

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. explain the principles and physiological significance of biochemical analytes commonly measured in clinical chemistry, including carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, enzymes, and electrolytes.
2. state the principles of chemistry testing including routine and specialized testing such as therapeutic drug monitoring, disease markers and viral loads.
3. correlate abnormal chemistry test results with associated disease states, such as diabetes mellitus, liver dysfunction, renal failure, and cardiovascular disorders.
4. describe and apply the principles of method validation and verification, including sensitivity, specificity, linearity, and reference intervals, as applied to clinical chemistry testing.
5. describe the fundamental basics of laboratory information systems (LIS) to enter, retrieve, and interpret clinical chemistry data accurately.
