MINE 130 - Earth Materials for Mining Engineering I (4 units) This course introduces earth materials in mining and metallurgical engineering. Provides overview of fundamental geologic principles, including identification and classification of minerals, rock types, and ore deposits. Relates earth material characteristics to performance of mine designs and metallurgical processing.

Prerequisite(s): Major or Minor in Mining Engineering or Metallurgical Engineering. Corequisite(s): CHEM 121A and CHEM 121L or CHEM 201 ; MATH 127 or higher.
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Units of Laboratory/Studio: 1 Offered: Every Fall
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe earth processes and features. 2. explain the use of earth materials in mining and construction. 3. identify common rocks and minerals encountered in mining as introduced in lecture and in hand samples. 4. develop a working understanding of mineral occurrences in precious metal, base metal, critical mineral, and non-metal operations. 5. develop a working understanding of geometallurgical characteristics of common ore deposits. 6. develop a working understanding of geological and geotechnical evaluation of mining operations.
