MET 460 - Integrated Extractive Metallurgy (3 Units) This course introduces the technologies and principles of extracting and refining metals by hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical, and electrometallurgical methods.
Students will study aqueous and high-temperature processing, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and electrochemical fundamentals. Industrial case studies—such as Cu SX-EW, Ni HPAL, Fe/steel smelting, and Al electrolysis—demonstrate modern practice and sustainability issues.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. describe unit operations in hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, and electrometallurgy. 2. apply thermodynamic and kinetic principles to model metallurgical processes. 3. analyze process flowsheets and identify mass/energy balances. 4. evaluate environmental and energy aspects of extractive metallurgy. 5. propose improvements for circular economy and low-carbon processing.
