MINE 654 - Principles of Mining Operations and Systems (3 Units) This course covers the fundamental engineering principles of mining operations, including rock mechanics, drilling, blasting, ventilation, and materials handling. Students learn how these systems interact to support safe and efficient mine design and production. Emphasis is placed on understanding physical processes, equipment functions, and the integration of these core mining components within modern operations.
Maximum units a student may earn: 3
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Summer
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain the fundamental principles of rock mechanics and their application to mine stability and ground control. 2. describe drilling methods, equipment, and parameters used in surface and underground mining. 3. apply basic blasting design concepts, including charge calculation, fragmentation, and safety considerations. 4. explain material handling systems and evaluate their efficiency in mine production. 5. describe the principles of mine ventilation, airflow, and contaminant control for safe working environments. 6. integrate concepts from rock mechanics, drilling, blasting, and ventilation to understand their interdependence in efficient mine design and operation. 7. analyze and evaluate the integration of rock mechanics, drilling, blasting, ventilation, and materials handling systems to apply advanced engineering judgment for improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability in mine operations.
