NVAI 100 - Fundamentals of AI

(3 units)
This introductory course introduces artificial intelligence by explaining what it is and how it works. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of AI concepts, including large language models (LLMs), and explore real-world applications of AI tools. Through hands-on activities, students will learn to leverage AI tools for tasks such as brainstorming, writing, generating images, and accelerating research. The course balances accessibility with practical know-how, preparing students for more interactive learning in subsequent courses.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. define artificial intelligence and explain how it works, including large language models.
2. identify the strengths and limitations of AI tools in various contexts.
3. develop and refine prompts to produce accurate and creative AI responses.
4. critically evaluate AI-generated content, including recognizing bias and general limitations.
5. explain the privacy implications of using AI tools through privacy statements and terms of service.
6. identify the energy use and environmental implications of generative AI.
