JOUR 497 - LGBTQ+ and the Media (3 units) CO10, CO13 This is a 16-module curriculum focused on LGBTQ+, journalism, media, and society. Each module is designed to cover critical aspects of LGBTQ+ representation and issues within media, journalism, and broader societal contexts. The modules focus on a comprehensive exploration of LGBTQ+ issues in the context of journalism, media, and society. Each module builds on critical themes, encouraging both academic and practical engagement with the subject matter.

Prerequisite(s): Junior or Senior standing and completion of Core Objectives 1-3 and three of Core Objectives 4-8
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall and Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. explain LGBTQ+ identities, the historical struggles for rights, and key cultural milestones. 2. critically evaluate LGBTQ+ representation in various media, identifying stereotypes, authentic portrayals, and shifts in public perception influenced by media. (Critical Media Analysis) 3. apply queer theory to analyze and interpret LGBTQ+ portrayals in film, television, and other media, recognizing the role of media in shaping societal norms. 4. compare LGBTQ+ representation across different countries, considering cultural and political influences on visibility and media narratives. 5. develop a consideration of ethical considerations in LGBTQ+ reporting, learning to avoid harmful stereotypes, ensure accurate language, and promote fair representation. 6. analyze LGBTQ+ issues through an intersectional lens, recognizing the unique challenges faced by individuals who hold multiple marginalized identities.
