MINE 200 - Fundamental of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering (4 Units) This course introduces the fundamentals of mining and metallurgical engineering, covering the full value chain from resource extraction to refined metals. Topics include mining methods, mine planning, ventilation, geomechanics, materials handling, and blasting, along with ore processing, metal extraction, and refining. Emphasis is placed on sustainability, permitting, land use, mine closure, and circular economy principles connecting mining, metallurgy, and environmental systems.
Maximum units a student may earn: 4
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 4 Offered: Every Summer
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. identify and describe major mining methods and their appropriate applications. 2. explain the fundamentals of mine planning, design, ventilation, ground control, and materials handling. 3. discuss environmental, permitting, and closure considerations in modern mining operations. 4. describe key unit operations in mineral processing, including crushing, grinding, and separation. 5. explain the basic principles of extractive metallurgy, including hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. 6. evaluate metallurgical process efficiency and sustainability within a circular economy framework. 7. integrate mining and metallurgical concepts to understand the complete value chain from ore to refined metal.
