CAS 760A - Clinical Interventions for Substance/COD Dx: Individuals

This course develops essential counseling skills for addiction and co-occurring disorders. Students learn therapeutic relationships through addiction-specific adaptations of psychological frameworks. Under supervision, students practice assessment, intervention strategies, and treatment planning. Emphasis includes ethics, skill development, and clinical compassion. Demonstrated competency required for Practicum and Internship enrollment.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. critically analyze specialized theories, models, and therapeutic approaches that effectively address the complex needs of individuals with co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders.
2. apply evidence-based adaptations of core counseling theories specifically tailored for clients at different stages of change in their recovery from co-occurring disorders.
3. demonstrate individual counseling skills with emphasis on establishing therapeutic alliance with clients experiencing addiction alongside other mental health conditions.
4. evaluate how intersecting factors including gender, ethnicity, culture, trauma history, and socioeconomic status influence both the manifestation of and recovery from co-occurring disorders.
5. critically examine personal assumptions, values, and potential biases that might impact clinical effectiveness when working with diverse populations experiencing co-occurring disorders.
6. demonstrate adaptability in therapeutic approach based on client presentation, incorporating feedback and self-reflection to optimize treatment outcomes.
7. integrate current research on best practices for assessment, treatment planning, and intervention with individuals experiencing co-occurring disorders.
