JOUR 494 - Critical Perspectives on AI in Media Communication (3 units) CO9 This is a 16-module course explores the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on society. We will examine how AI technologies shape various domains, from media, healthcare, economics to privacy, employment, and ethics. The syllabus is designed to provide a comprehensive exploration of AI’s societal impact, both positive and negative, and the challenges and opportunities it presents for the future. By the end of the class, students will have demonstrated their ability to critically analyze the nature of AI and be able to investigate its influence and uses for professional endeavors and investigate its significance.

Prerequisite(s): Junior and Senior standing
Grading Basis: Graded Units of Lecture: 3 Offered: Every Fall and Spring
Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. discuss the foundational concepts of AI and its key technologies. 2. evaluate real-world AI applications. 3. explain the implications of critical AI cases in media. 4. explore the future of AI, including emerging trends, regulations, and ethical considerations. 5. complete a project or structured experience of practical significance that demonstrates AI and media related knowledge and skills. 6. evaluate the overall impacts of AI in media and society. 7. articulate the connections between communication theories and social implications of AI (for graduate students).
