PHIL 400 - Professionalization Workshop: Law, Medicine, and Philosophy

This course prepares students for advanced professional degrees in law, medicine, or philosophy. Students learn the elements and structures for three key dimensions of professionalism—personal statements, resumes/CVs, and interview techniques. As a workshop, it is of a practical nature: Each student will prepare versions of those materials tailored to their professional aspirations, share them for critique, and comment on others’ drafts or interviews. Ideally, students would take this course in the spring before they apply to these programs.

Prerequisite(s): Major or minor in Philosophy, 6 units in PHIL

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. write and revise personal statements suitable for use in their applications for admission to their chosen professional program in law, medicine, or philosophy.
2. learn and apply the conventions of resumes or curricula vitae.
3. practice and show improved interview skills.
4. evaluate, and offer constructive critiques of, peer professional portfolios.
