MICR 302 - Pathogens and Safety

Explores pathogen management strategies in research and healthcare settings, emphasizing the development of biosafety plans to address real-world scenarios effectively.

Prerequisite(s): Junior or senior standing and completion of Core Objectives 1-3, plus three of Core Objectives 4-8, and one of the following courses: MICR 100  or MICR 276  or BIOL 251  or BIOL 351 or MICR 202 .

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. assess occupational exposure risks and describe the characteristics, exposure pathways, and impacts of pathogens on human health and the environment. 
2. explain and apply aseptic techniques, universal precautions, and discuss the importance of medical surveillance in managing biohazardous agents. 
3. discuss the use of PPE, administrative and engineering controls, and facility design to ensure biohazard containment. 
4. compare sterilization, decontamination, and disinfection processes, evaluate their effectiveness, and identify methods for the disposal of biohazardous materials.
5. interpret and compare guidelines from various health and safety organizations for work with biohazards, critically analyze risks, and propose biosafety practices for handling of specific pathogens.
6. prepare and communicate plans for safely working with biohazardous materials through written reports and oral presentations.
