BIOL 631L - Ichthyology Laboratory

This course offers hands-on training in fisheries science through field, laboratory, and data-analysis approaches. Students learn fish sampling techniques across aquatic habitats, proper handling to collect biological data, and fisheries analyses using R to assess growth, condition, and population dynamics. The course also examines local and global fisheries conservation and management challenges and potential solutions.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. apply standard fish sampling, handling, and preservation techniques accurately to collect high-quality fisheries data and specimens for ecological and morphological analyses.
2. differentiate major fish taxa using diagnostic anatomical features and develop proficiency in constructing and using dichotomous keys to support accurate species identification.
3. analyze fish form and function relationships using morphological and meristic measurements and skeletal or anatomical observations to interpret ecological and evolutionary adaptations.
4. analyze and interpret ichthyological and fisheries data using appropriate quantitative methods and evaluate the reliability of resulting findings.
5. communicate methodological approaches, analytical results, and scientific interpretations through well-structured reports and oral presentations tailored to disciplinary standards.
6. develop a scientific manuscript or agency report using analytical methods introduced in the class.
