SW 442 - Data Analysis for Social Workers

This course introduces students to the concepts, principles, and procedures social work practitioners and researchers use to analyze, interpret, and present data. Emphasis is placed on developing the knowledge, values, and skills needed to analyze and interpret one’s own practice effectiveness, as well as critically evaluate the assessment and research findings of others. Instruction in computer-assisted quantitative data analyses (e.g., Excel and SPSS) is provided. In addition, an introduction to the formative and process evaluation approaches commonly used by health and human services programs is also provided.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. articulate how data are used to inform social work interventions, programs, and policy decisions.
2. articulate the ethical, power, and privilege considerations that influence the collection, analysis, presentation, and interpretation of data.
3. evaluate the effectiveness of a practice intervention using a single system design.
4. prepare data for analysis and use computer software to conduct basic data analyses.
5. read, create, and interpret tables, graphs, and summaries of quantitative findings.
6. interpret basic statistical tests of association and difference to inform practice decisions.
7. apply basic qualitative analysis strategies, such as content analysis, and use findings to inform program or practice decisions, including applying a logic model.
