SPSY 793 - Teaching Practicum in Social Sciences

(1-3 units)
This practicum prepares participants to design, facilitate, and evaluate high-quality learning experiences. Emphasis is placed on applying evidence-based pedagogy, crafting engaging discussion prompts and activities, designing lessons using multimedia and voiceover best practices, and ensuring accessibility for all learners, including those with disabilities.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. design an undergraduate-level course by creating a complete syllabus, course assignments, and student learning objectives aligned with programmatic goals and best teaching practices.
2. identify or apply evidence-based instructional strategies to deliver engaging and inclusive lectures and classroom activities.
3. critically evaluate the effectiveness of various assessment tools, including exams, assignments, and student feedback, and justify their use in specific teaching contexts.
4. develop a reflective teaching philosophy and a comprehensive teaching portfolio that demonstrates readiness to teach and advise at the college level.
5. respond to classroom challenges such as academic dishonesty, trauma disclosures, or struggling students with ethical and professional strategies.
