ENG 448 - Film Feminisms (3 units) CO10, CO13 In this class we will both review important moments in feminist film theory—moving beyond the male gaze (enough already!) to consider what it means to watch, critique, and create films as a feminist—as well as important moments in feminist filmmaking. We will organize our approach to our films and readings through key feminist research methods, key feminist questions, feminist feelings (Anger! Desire! Boredom!), and feminist genre revisions.
Maximum units a student may earn: 3
Prerequisite(s): General Education courses (CO1-CO3) completed; at least 3 courses from CO4-CO8 completed; Junior or Senior standing. Recommended Preparation: ENG 202 or ENG 303 .

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. articulate ways in which feminist film and film theory has addressed the intersection of social identities such as race, sexuality, class, and gender. 2. identify and summarize current scholarly conversations within feminist film studies and use them to critically examine a film of the student’s choosing. 3. conduct close readings of film form and style (cinematography, editing, mise-en-scène, sound, narrative structure) in order to analyze how films reinforce, complicate, or resist dominant ideologies.
