HIST 390 - History of the Ottoman Empire (3 units) CO11 History of the Ottoman Empire from its foundation in the fourteenth century to its ultimate fall in the twentieth century, with a special emphasis on its social, political, and cultural systems that shaped the societies across Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or higher.

Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. identify and analyze key elements of the Ottoman Empire and its impact on the social, cultural, and political developments that shaped the pre-modern Islamic and Mediterranean worlds, as well as the broader global community since the fourteenth century. 2. identify and discuss the legacy of the Ottoman Empire in modern states that emerged from former Ottoman territories in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa with a focus on changes and continuities in society and politics. 3. examine the diversity of communities, customs, and lived experiences in local and interregional contexts. 4. analyze, interpret, and demonstrate knowledge about primary and secondary sources through class activities, discussions, and written assignments.
