FILM 326 - Cinematography

Cinematography is an introductory course exploring the art and craft of visual storytelling through cinematographic lighting, composition, and movement. Specifically, we will learn how to “motivate” our cinematographic choices to be in service of the stories we tell. Almost every class will involve hands-on workshops and analysis of how techniques have been used historically, across artistic mediums.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. distinguish between the technical and creative requirements for acquiring an emotionally-motivated image.
2. prepare and operate appropriate camera and lighting support to execute a given shot.
3. assess and construct what is cinematographically required (coverage) to edit a scene.
4. analyze relationships between works of art/cinema and their technical, psychological, and cultural contexts.
