The department offers a variety of undergraduate educational opportunities leading to the degree of bachelor of science. The program provides students with a solid background in natural science and the choice of specializing in specific areas of biology, as well as the opportunity for participation in faculty guided research. Students who successfully complete the program are prepared to compete nationally for admission to graduate programs in the life and health sciences, medical and dental school, and entrance into civil service and industrial positions. Requirements for admission to most medical schools can be met by completion of the biology major without the need for additional courses.

All biology majors complete a core of required biology and related courses and select a group of elective courses to comprise a concentrated field of study. The department offers two areas of emphasis within the major: cell and molecular biology and ecology and evolutionary biology. Students are encouraged to develop with their advisors an individualized program of study within these areas.

Biology majors are required to complete the courses of the University Core Curriculum.
