Master of Arts Degree, Foreign Languages and Literatures


The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers a program of graduate study leading to the degree of Master of Arts with a major in foreign languages and literatures. Candidates for the advanced degree may specialize in French or Spanish.

The student must meet the general university requirements for admission to graduate standing. In addition, each student must have acquired a degree of proficiency in a foreign language approved by the department, and generally must have a grade- point average no lower than 3.0 in the major field of concentration as an undergraduate.

Plan A requires 30 graduate units. At least 18 units, including six thesis credits, must be in 700-level courses. If a minor is approved, at least six graduate credits are required in the minor area.

Plan B requires 32 graduate units. At least 15 units must be in 700-level courses. No thesis is required. If a minor is approved, a minimum of nine graduate credits are required in the minor area.

FLL 702  is required of all graduate students. FLL 703  is required of all graduate teaching assistants. All students are required to take FLL 795  for one units, but this will not count towards the 700 level credits required.
