Civil and Environmental Engineering, Ph.D.

Continuing education beyond the bachelor’s degree is recommended for prospective civil and environmental engineering professionals. The master’s degree program is a recommended course of study for civil and environmental engineers. The department offers programs leading to the master of science degree and the doctor of philosophy degree in civil and environmental engineering. In consultation with an advisor, students take courses with emphasis in structures, soil mechanics and foundations, pavement materials, traffic and transportation engineering, or environmental and water resources engineering. Both Plan A (requiring the completion of a thesis) and Plan B (nonthesis) study opportunities are available for the master of science degree program. Specific departmental requirements for the masters and doctorate programs may be obtained from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The department also participates in the interdisciplinary master of science degree with a major in hydrologic sciences in cooperation with several other departments. At the doctorate level, the department participates in an interdisciplinary program in hydrologic sciences. Teaching and research assistantships are available in civil and environmental engineering. Applications for assistantships are due by February 15 for the fall semester and by October 1 for the spring semester.
