Geophysics, B.S. in Geophysics


The following are the minimum requirements for undergraduate majors in geophysics, who need 120 total credits for graduation.

I. University Core Curriculum Requirements (40-45 units)


NOTE: Refer to the Core Curriculum  chapter of this catalog for information regarding the “Core English and Math Completion Policy.

A. English (3-8 units)


Refer to the “English” section of the Core Curriculum  chapter in this catalog.

NOTE: Students who place in ENG 102  are not required to complete ENG 101 .

 

B. Mathematics (4 units)


  Refer to the “Mathematics” section of the Core Curriculum  chapter in this catalog.

D. Social Sciences (3 units)


Refer to the “Social Sciences” section of the Core Curriculum  chapter in this catalog.

E. Fine Arts (3 units)


Refer to the “Fine Arts” section of the Core Curriculum  chapter in this catalog.

F. Core Humanities (9 units)

III. Major Requirements (69 units)


A. Geophysics (12 units)


Summer field course or research experience (3 units)


Advisor approval required. Select one from the following:

  1. GEOL 451 - Summer Field Geology (3 units)
  2. The Summer of Applied Geophysical Experience (SAGE) offered through Los Alamos Lab.
  3. A geophysical Field Camp offered through another university.
  4. GEOL 495 - Special Problems  taken with a Geophysical Faculty member.

Note(s):


The addition of PHYS 323  and PHYS 423  Intermediate and Advanced Physics Lab - 3 units total will satisfy the physics minor.

E. Technical electives (9 units) in a single area


IV. Minor Requirements (0 units)


There is no minor requirement.

  • For students wishing to go into energy or exploration industries, the following course is highly recommended and may be required for minors in Geology or Hydrogeology:

  •  

  • Other minors that are highly complementary to the Geophysics degree include Physics, Mathematics, Atmospheric Sciences, and Engineering programs.

V. Electives (6-11 units)


Students are strongly encouraged to take courses in related fields of interest.
