Graduate studies include theoretical, experimental, and applied research in seismology, geophysical exploration, environmental methods, paleomagnetism, rock magnetism, and remote sensing. Students pursue research projects around the globe as well as in Nevada’s unique and accessible terrain.

Available facilities include one of the world’s largest digitally recorded seismic networks; a state-of-the-art paleomagnetism/ rock magnetism laboratory; field instrumentation for seismic, gravity, magnetic, and electrical studies; and a network of mini-supercomputers for rapid data processing and scientific visualization.

Prospective applicants should have a degree in the geological sciences, physical sciences or engineering fields. The M.S. degree is 31 credits and the Ph.D. degree is 73 credits. Both degrees include a 1 credit comprehensive examination which may not be used to satisfy the 18 and 30 credits of 700-level course work required for the M. S. and Ph.D. degrees, respectively. Other admission and degree requirements are listed in the Graduate School  section of this catalog. Contact the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering office or the geophysics faculty for more details.
