Master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees are offered in chemical engineering. Students must have an engineering undergraduate degree, except those with a B.S. in chemistry, who may be admitted to the special M.S. program by taking additional preparatory courses. All applicants must provide scores on the general part of the GRE examination. Deadlines for assistantships are March 15 for fall and October 1 for spring.

Requirements include the following for Chemical Engineering:

A. Core Courses

CHE 741 - Advanced Kinetics and Reactor Design (3 units)
CHE 760 - Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics (3 units)
CHE 764 - Advanced Transport Phenomena I (3 units)
CHE 765 - Advanced Transport Phenomena II (3 units)
CHE 790 - Seminar (1 to 3 units) (2 units for M.S., 6 units for Ph.D.)
CHE 795R - Comprehensive Examination (1 to 3 units S/U Only) (Ph.D. only, written original research proposal plus oral defense)
CHE 797 - Thesis (1 to 6 units) (M.S. only-6 units)
CHE 799 - Dissertation (1 to 24 units) (Ph.D. only-24 units)

B. Electives (M.S.)

10 graduate course credits approved by thesis committee

C. Electives (Ph.D.)

30 graduate course credits approved by dissertation committee (including at least 12 graduate course credits at the 700-level

D. Oral Qualifying Examination (Ph.D.)

Research and teaching assistantships are available to Ph.D. students. Current areas of research are: biomaterials, chemical process safety, polymer engineering, process control, biomedical engineering, fuel cells, renewable energy, process simulation, molecular simulation, surface and colloid engineering, applied surfactant research, fluidization, process design and optimization, separation processes, water treatment, phase equilibria, reaction engineering, and risk analysis.
