Students may select the gerontology certificate program to acquire a specialization in the field of aging that provides a foundation for professional development in many careers. The gerontology certificate program offers an interdisciplinary curriculum, provides a broad base of knowledge as it is applied to the aging process, examines issues of concern to the older adult in today’s society, and includes a practice component where students must apply theoretical knowledge in a community setting serving older adults.
To complete the gerontology certificate, students must take 18 credits of required core courses and 6 credits of electives. The following courses fulfill the minimum 220 hour service learning requirement: GERO 201 , CHS 337 , GERO 431 , GERO 440, GERO 499, and SPA 421 .

- CPD 140–Respite & Family Care (3 units)
- PSY 276 / SOC 276–Aging in Modern American Society (3 units)
Note(s):
NOTE: Other courses may be accepted as electives if half of the content covered pertains to aging. Students are strongly encouraged to take a course that focuses on communication and/or counseling skills such as CHS 310 - Health and Wellness Communication . |
