Description


The department offers courses leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts with a major in music.

Courses in the literature of music, applied music and performance are offered as part of the university’s core curriculum. More specialized courses in these areas and in music theory and methods for music teachers are offered for cultural enrichment and for the professional preparation of performers and teachers. Performance organizations are open to all university students by audition. These include bands (marching, pep, symphonic, and wind ensemble), chamber ensembles (strings, winds, and vocal), choir, opera, jazz (bands and combos), and orchestra. Specific offerings depend on enrollment and availability of faculty.

I. University Core Curriculum Requirements (33-46 units)

NOTE : Students who place in ENG 102  are not required to complete ENG 101 .

C. Natural Sciences (6-8 units)


Refer to the “Natural Sciences” section of the Core Curriculum  chapter in this catalog. 

D. Social Sciences (3 units)

E. Fine Arts (3 units)


Music majors will satisfy the Fine Arts requirement through the Ensemble requirement.

F. Core Humanities (9 units)

H. Diversity (0-3 units)


Refer to the “Diversity” section of the Core Curriculum  chapter in this catalog. This requirement can be satisfied simultaneously with the Capstone requirement.

II. Additional College Requirements (6-20 units)


Units may vary depending on initial course placement in foreign language coursework.

A. Foreign Language (0-14 units)


Successful completion of the foreign language requirement may be accomplished through one of four options:

  1. complete a fourth semester college course in a foreign language or in American Sign Language;
  2. demonstrate proficiency through placement examination or other means determined by the Department of World Languages and Literatures, including minimum CBAPE, SAT II, or IB scores;
  3. show transcript evidence of successful completion of four years of high school coursework in the same foreign language; or
  4. participate in a Studies Abroad program pre-approved by the college to meet the foreign language requirement.

B. College Breadth Requirement (6 units)


Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree in the college shall be required to take, within the College of Liberal Arts, two courses that are outside the departments in which they major or minor, and that exclude courses taken to fulfill Core Curriculum requirements.

B. Applied Individual Instruction (6 units)


No more than one applied music unit per semester may count toward section B. Must be on a single instrument or voice. All students enrolled in applied lessons must also co-register for an appropriate ensemble (see advisor).
