II. Brief Introduction


The Anthropology Department offers courses leading to the Master of Arts. The department also administers the Historic Preservation Program and participates in the Master of Science degree in Land Use Planning Policy , described in the College of Science section of this catalog.

III. Program Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes


  1. Students should be able to discuss the concepts that allow the intellectual integration of four sub-fields together into anthropology; and each sub-field’s major contributions to the scientific and humanistic study of our own species.
  2. Students should be successful in finding professional employment in their specialty; or alternatively students should be able to apply successfully to doctoral programs at any university in the U.S.A.
  3. Students who graduate with an M.A. in Anthropology from UNR will have skills and experience in original research.

IV. Admission Requirements


Students pursuing the Masters of Arts degree must satisfy all graduate school requirements and specific departmental requirements. Master’s students are admitted to the program only in the fall semester. The department deadline for application is January 15th.

V. Program Requirements


18 of the 31 required units must be a the 700 level. A thesis is required. Optional emphases for the thesis include: environmental archaeology, historical archaeology, cultural anthropology and ethno linguistics.
